Connecting from a DOS-system using TCP/IP

The "Microsoft Network Client 3.0" can be used with the 'simple' protocols NetBEUI and IPX/SPX, but can also be used with the more complex and powerful TCP/IP-protocol.



Please follow the instructions as for using the NetBEUI-protocol, until
you reach the screen for "Change Networking Configuration":


Select now to install in addition the TCP/IP-protocol:


Use the the TAB-key to change the selection-box, high-light the IPX/SPX-
protocol, press TAB-again to change the selection-box and select "Remove"
to delete the IPX/SPX-protocol from the list.
Then use the TAB-key again to switch the selection-box to select the
TCP/IP-protocol, press the TAB-key again and select "Change Settings":
(please, do not be confused now by the different type of networking card, because I had now the
3COM FastEthernet 3C905B network card installed when making this installation and not anymore
the 3COM 3C509B as in the previous screen-shots)



We need to check the TCP/IP configuration:

By default, the Network-Client is setup for "Automatic Configuration",
which is equivalent to the Windows95 "obtain an IP-address automatically":
to request an IP-address from a DHCP-server.

If you have no DHCP-server on your network or prefer to assign manually
an IP-address, then "Disable the Automatic Configuration" (setting the value
to '1') and define the IP-address, Subnet-Mask and gateway:



NOTE: In Windows95/98 and NT4, the Bytes of the IP-address are
separated by a '.' (example: 192.169.1.1), but in the Network Client 3.0,
the Bytes of an IP-address are separated by a blank: 192 168 1 1 (no DOTS!)

Then save the TCP/IP-settings:


You will be prompted for the OEM-driver disk:


This is the floppy with the files extracted from the DSK3-2.EXE.

You will be requested later to insert again floppy#1, then the installation is
finished and you can now reboot, using the TCP/IP drivers for the network:


We can test the connection to the server using the PING-test and
then map a network drive, using the "NET USE" - command:


You can check the TCP/IP-settings in the file: PROTOCOL.INI:

(and here is shows in the [TCPIP] - section:
"DisableDHCP" instead of the "Disable Automatic Configuration".)

Please, do NOT edit this file manually, simply run SETUP.EXE, which is
stored in the \NET-directory, to change any network setting.

A last word of warning:
Using the "Network Client 3.0" with NetBEUI- protocol uses already
a lot of the valuable DOS-memory, but TCP/IP requires even more:
